I have just been pointed to ESRI’s online training resources for GIS – what an incredible selection! There are both paid and free modules and can be explored here. There is an incredible range, the couple that look to be standouts (to me) are:
- Turning Data into Information with ArcGIS 10
- Using Python in ArcGIS Desktop 10
There also seems to be a real rise in the popularity and use of open source GIS software. Quantum GIS (QGIS) seems to have a particularly active community, and works alongside PostGIS (a specialised PostgreSQL database). QGIS have a comprehensive training manual, and online tutorials. QGIS is now being actively used in industry, NIWA support their own open source mapping software, Quantum Map, using the latest open source GIS technologies.
